FESTIVAL MOZAIC POSTPONES 50th ANNIVERSARY SEASON TO 2021

April 23, 2020   SAN LUIS OBISPO, CA

Festival Mozaic, an annual summer celebration of music for the past 49 years in San Luis Obispo County, has announced that its 50th Anniversary season, originally scheduled for July 18-August 1, 2020, will be postponed to July 17-31, 2021.  The announcement was made by Festival Executive Director Lloyd Tanner.

“It is with the deepest regret that we must postpone Festival Mozaic’s 2020 summer program, especially in the Festival’s 50th Anniversary season,” Tanner said. “After closely monitoring the spread of COVID-19 and in compliance with recommendations of state and county health organizations and civil authorities, we cannot in good faith continue to plan for our summer concerts and events. The health and safety of our musicians, audience members, staff, volunteers, vendors, hosts, and of San Luis Obispo County itself, are of utmost importance to all of us. We look forward to celebrating our 50th Anniversary Summer Festival in July 2021. We promise it will be worth the wait!”

Festival Mozaic staff is in the process of reaching out to 2020 Summer Season ticket holders. The plan is to replicate the 2020 schedule of artists, programs, and events for July 2021. Current ticket holders will have their tickets automatically moved to 2021. Alternatively, ticket holders may choose to donate the value of their tickets to the Festival as a tax-deductible contribution or elect to receive a full or partial refund.

“In these times of heightened anxiety and vigilance,” Tanner said, “we celebrate the vital role the arts play in our lives. They nourish our hearts and minds, teach us valuable life lessons, and help us create community. We are resolved not to lose sight of what connects us, and we encourage our patrons to follow us on social media and continue to be part of our community from wherever they are.”

A Note from Scott Yoo, Music Director:

“This season marks my 15th Anniversary Season with Festival Mozaic. San Luis Obispo is dear to my wife, flutist Alice Dade, and me, and we are heartbroken not to be able to make music with you this year. But please know I’m working with the staff to create additional opportunities to be with you both virtually and in-person as soon as it is safe and possible.”

FAQ’s

Q: WHY WAS IT NECESSARY TO POSTPONE THE SUMMER FESTIVAL THIS YEAR?

A: In short, we had to postpone this summer’s Festival because we do not know when the State of California’s requirements for physical distancing in group gatherings will be lifted. Based on current guidance, we anticipate that physical distancing will continue to be a requirement of our public life at least through the summer. While heartbreaking, our primary responsibility is to ensure the health and safety of our patrons, musicians, staff, volunteers, hosts and the broader San Luis Obispo County community. Additionally, it is our responsibility to preserve the integrity and reputation of the Festival, ensuring it will be here to entertain and engage audiences for another 50 years.

Q: WHY CAN’T THE FESTIVAL JUST BE POSTPONED TO LATER IN THE YEAR?

A: Due to the fluid nature of this unprecedented crisis, public health officials are not able to tell us when it will be safe to host large gatherings or events. Postponing at this time allows us to work with our musicians, our venues, and our vendors to ensure they can be a part of next year’s Festival. Also, the majority of our musicians are available only during the summer, when they are not performing their duties at major orchestras across the country.

Q: WILL THE 2021 MUSICAL PROGRAM BE THE SAME AS 2020 FESTIVAL PROGRAM?

A: Our 50th Anniversary musical program was thoughtfully composed to include surprises, special group performances, and many first-time Festival performers. The plan is to present the same chamber and orchestra repertoire originally scheduled in 2020 during the 2021 summer festival. We are in the process of confirming all of our 50th Anniversary artists and venues for the 2021 summer season. If any changes are necessary, we will notify existing ticket buyers and will update our website and social media. The 50th Anniversary Season program is exceptional and befits such a celebration. We will make sure the 50th anniversary season in 2021 will be worth the wait!
