Master Classes with Festival Artists

What is a master class?
A master class is a a class given to students in a specific discipline by an expert in that discipline - usually in music, but can be in other areas like drama, painting, or other arts where skills are being developed. The difference between a normal class and a master class is typically the setup. In a master class, all the students (and spectators) watch and listen as the master takes one student at a time. The student usually performs a single piece which they have prepared, and the master will give them advice on how to play it, often including anecdotes about the composer, demonstrations of how to play certain passages, and suggestions on how to combat technical errors. The student is then usually expected to play the piece again, in light of the master's comments, and the student may be asked to play a passage repeatedly to improve. The value of the master class setup is that all students can benefit from the master's comments on each piece, and each student gains valuable performance experience.
All master classes are FREE to participate in and to attend! Come watch talented young students perform as they are guided and instructed by Festival artists, who are gifted teachers in addition to gifted performers. These classes are fun and informative for musicians and non-musicians alike! Contact General Manager Dave George with any questions or if you are a student interested in participating in a class.
The Master Class series is generously sponsored by the Handler & Steiner Family Fund at the Community Foundation of San Luis Obispo County.
