Written in 1940, this serenely beautiful chamber work is a reflection of the ‘calm before the storm’ in Soviet history. Its beauty and accessibility made it so popular in Russia that it “overshadowed the football matches, was discussed in trams, and people tried to sing in the streets the second defiant theme of the finale.” After the outbreak of war and the devastation it would inflict upon the Russian people, the Quintet remained as the last ray of light before the future sank into a dark gloom. In this one-hour interactive presentation, the musicians serve as tour guides through this magnificent work in one of SLO County’s most beautiful acoustic spaces.
