Lutoslawski Variations on a Theme by Paganini
for Two Pianos
Two exquisite Steinways, 176 keys, four hands and two powerful pianists face off in San Luis Obispo County’s newest acoustic marvel on the beautiful Cuesta College campus. Rachmaninoff’s powerful Suite was the result of hypnotherapy treatment the composer sought to help him out of a crippling depression. He later wrote the beautiful Trio Élégiaque as a memorial to Tchaikovsky. During WWII, the Nazis banned some of Europe’s finest musicians from the concert stages. Polish composer Lutoslawski survived in part by playing in the cafés and cabarets of Warsaw, the venues for which this rollicking piece was written.
